Microneedling

            What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves very fine, short needles puncturing the skin, creating micro-injuries which in turn, bring new collagen and elastin to the dermis itself. The activation of new cell growth reduces fine lines and wrinkles, firms texture, brightens complexion, reduces puffy eyes and sagging appearance. It is a natural alternative to botox, and highly encouraged to complete 4 treatments in order to optimize results.

Microneedling FAQs

What is microneedling used for?

Any of the following criteria are the most common reasons patients get microneedling:

  • Firming and tightening the skin
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Brightening complexion
  • Reducing hair loss and creating new hair growth patterns
  • Minimizing pore size
  • Reducing of acne scars
  • Reducing old scarring, surgical scars and stretchmarks
  • Reducing the visibility of cellulite

Who is a good candidate for microneedling and who should avoid this procedure?

Microneedling is a beneficial treatment to almost all skin types. Depending on your goal, will depend on the depth of the small needles gently puncturing the skin.

From decreasing fine lines and wrinkles to treating hair loss, micro and nanoneedling are proficient therapies that bring new collagen and elastin cells to the affected area in order to elicit a new growth response.

While the majority of skin types are perfect candidates for microneedling, patients who are on anticoagulants, pregnant, have taken Accutane within the last 3 months, or who have received Botox in the last 3-5 days, should not receive microneedling.

What is the difference between microneedling and nano needling?

Microneedling penetrates through the epidermis and the dermis, the skin layer below the epidermis (or most superficial layer), while nanoneedling only penetrates through the epidermis. Microneedling is the best option for those interested in decreasing fine lines and wrinkles, acne scar and scar treatment, hair loss, and/or reducing cellulite while those interested in correcting hyperpigmentation and overall brightening the complexion, nano needling is the better option.

How often do I need microneedling treatments?

Microneedling treatments vary depending on patient goals; however, 4-6 treatments is standard. It is necessary to allow the skin at least a month in between sessions, in order to both heal and complete the process of new collagen and elastin production before creating new “micro-traumas,” that start the process all over again. Microneedling, much like acupuncture, works in tandem with previous treatments; therefore, slight improvement in skin tone and texture will build upon previous treatments.

Nano-needling, because it only penetrates the epidermis, can be done weekly.

How long do the results last?

The specific length of time will depend on a variety of factors, such as age, skin type, skin texture, and how well the patient’s skin responds to treatment and heals. While microneedling permanently creates new collagen and elastin in treated areas, the process of aging will continue. Most patients seek annual or semi-annual treatment to keep up with natural loss in production in order to maintain results
